1/12/08 at about 3am, Norton Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Plain Street and South Washington Street to investigate a pair of suspicious subjects that had been reported by a Plain Street resident.
The resident had observed two subjects, one wearing a knit cap and the other a "hoodie", walking in his backyard, coming from the area of his garage. Suspecting they might have broken into the garage, he phoned the police.
Ptlm. Mahoney located a vehicle parked along the side of Perry Street, a short distance from where the subjects had been seen. Two males, identified as Joseph BEATRICE and Chad PIERCE, both of Brockton, occupied the vehicle. Located in the vehicle by Ptlm. Mahoney and Sgt. Dennett were several pairs of black gloves, a couple of flashlights, a tire iron, and a GPS unit that was sitting unconnected on the back
seat. After an investigation and identification by a witness, the subjects were placed under arrest and transported to the Norton Police Station for booking.
Both are charged with Possession of Burglarious Tools, Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime to Commit a Felony, and Receiving Stolen Property. Additionally BEATRICE has been charged with Possession of a Class B substance and PIERCE with Possession of a Class D substance.
While officers were still booking the subjects, another Plain Street resident came into the Station and reported that her vehicle had been broken into overnight. She viewed the articles that had been recovered and identified several as hers.
Ptlm. Turcotte, took the GPS unit that had been recovered and followed it "home" to another Plain Street residence. He checked vehicles parked there and determined that they had likely been broken into. He then spoke with a resident there and confirmed that the GPS unit was from one of the vehicles.
The subjects are also suspected of breaking into at least one garage in the vicinity of the others.
Other evidence found in the suspect vehicle indicates that other communities might have been victimized as well. The Norton Police will be following up on that aspect.
Both BEATRICE and PIERCE are being held at the Norton Police Department on $2,500.00 cash bail awaiting arraignment in Attleboro District Court on Monday, January 14, 2008.
